Kirkwood Winery – Frontenac Gris

In the glass this wine appears to glow.  The nose is an explosion of fruit, including notes of apricot, peach, and pineapple.  It is intensely flavorful, with the same tropical fruits as the nose, supported in part by hints of green apple.  Well-balanced and structured, this is a complex wine that could make any Iowan proud.  Best served with light dishes or even by itself, slightly chilled.

Fireside Winery – Hearthstone

Deep ruby coloring with a slight brown hue.  Oak, cherry, cranberry and chocolate on the nose.  Medium bodied with bright acidity which fades pleasantly against the palate.  Best served with a meal, such as pasta with red sauce.

Cedar Ridge Winery – LoVines Red Wine

Sappy and cloying with weak rusted ruby color.  Bright fruit, including jammy grape and sticky plum.  Heavy chapitalization works in contrast to subtle tannins and oakiness on the palate, leaving a distinct, lingering finish which is not all that pleasant.  Best served slightly chilled and with deserts.

Cedar Ridge Winery – Briana, Iowa White Wine

This pale straw wine is bright and vibrant in the glass, with crisp green apple notes which are bright on the nose.  There is a bit of minerality and a hint of sulphur as well.  Give it a swirl and you’ll be rewarded with a nose of peach and apricot.  On the palate it’s sweet and fruity, displaying the apricot notes particularly.  It displays a soft acidity and a mineral finish.  As it lingers on the tongue, it gives the faint impression of imbalance.  Best served with a desert that will complement the fruit and the sweetness of the wine.
